A guide to zero-downtime data center migration

A guide to zero-downtime data center migration

Data center migration is one of the operations most organizations dread, because the margin for error is small and the impact is large. Yet with the right inventory, sequencing and rollback plan, the process becomes uninterrupted and predictable.

Inventory and dependency map

Before migrating, we map the dependencies of every application, server and data flow. A migration done without knowing which system depends on which is the leading cause of unexpected downtime.

This map lets migration waves be sequenced correctly and risks be seen in advance.

Wave-by-wave, reversible migration

We migrate systems not all at once but in logical groups, in waves. Each wave has a rollback plan; in an unexpected situation we can return to the old environment in seconds.

Validation and performance testing

After each wave we run functional and performance tests. When users move to the new environment, we make sure the system runs at least as fast and stable as before.

Key takeaways
  • Complete inventory and dependency analysis
  • Wave-by-wave, reversible migration plan
  • Validation and performance testing at every stage
  • Flexible target architectures, including hybrid cloud
